There’s no better way to enjoy a New York winter than to check it out from the back of a snowmobile. There’s something about the experience of the wind in your face and the gleaming fields of white under your skis that epitomizes the beauty of winter. Before you toss on your helmet and pick up your keys, however, make sure you’ve got your paperwork in order.

Your snowmobile needs to be covered by a New York auto insurance policy.

If you’re a dedicated snowmobiler you already know the rules regarding snowmobiling. You know, the ones that say you need to register your snowmobile, wear a helmet when you drive and carry liability if you’re going to be anywhere near traffic! If you’re new to the game, however, or grew up in a part of the state that’s slightly less diligent when it comes to the rules and regulations of owning a snowmobile (you know they’re out there) it’s time for a quick run-down on the rules and regulations of winter’s coolest sport.

1)      Unless you plan on restricting yourself to your own private property or that which you have a contractual agreement to ride on (which is no fun anyway) you have to register your snowmobile with the DMV. That’s no big deal in and of itself, although, like registering your car, it can get a little expensive when the taxes and fees are all added in.

2)      Once it’s registered, you need New York auto insurance before you can ride your snowmobile out near the roads. To quote the New York DMV: “Proof of insurance is not necessary when registering a snowmobile. However, the Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Law requires the owner of a snowmobile to have liability insurance if the snowmobile is operated on a roadway, shoulder of a highway, or on property which is owned, leased or held in easement by a person other than the owner or operator of the snowmobile.”

3)      Never, ever ride without a helmet. The number of accidents that occur each year involving snowmobiles is on the rise, and the last thing you want to do is get caught out without a helmet.

That’s about all the state has to say on the matter although, if you live in a semi-populated area, you’re probably going to want to check out any town ordinances pertaining to snowmobiles. The more you know, the less chance local law enforcement is going to have to hassle you and the more enjoyment you’re going to get from your complete snowmobiling experience.
