The South Dakota auto insurance requirements stipulated by law are:

$25,000 bodily injury per person in an accident; $50,000 bodily injury total for all injured in an accident

$25,000 for property damage

$25,000/$50,000 bodily injury for uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UMI).

Drivers may also satisfy the South Dakota minimum auto insurance requirements though a Certificate of Deposit, or securities of at least $50,000 deposited with the State Treasurer’s office. South Dakota motorists must carry proof of financial responsibility at all times in the form of a valid auto insurance card, certificate of deposit or certificate of self-insurance. Failure in providing proof of insurance upon request may result in license suspenditure for 30 days to a year, a $100 fine, as well as potential jail time.

Please note that these are minimums required by South Dakota state law, not suggested coverage amounts. The simple fact is, each state’s minimum requirements are typically inadequate to sufficiently cover your costs should you be involved in a major accident. The shortfall will have to be made up out of your own pocket. Obviously, having to pay this difference could easily destroy one financially.
