North Carolina Auto Insurance Requirements
The North Carolina auto insurance requirements stipulated by law are:
$30,000 Bodily Injury for each person, $60,000 total Bodily Injury for all persons in an accident.
and
$25,000 for Property Damage.
North Carolina Motor Vehicle General Statute 20-279.21(b)(3) and (b)(4) requires that all licensed drivers carry Uninsured/Underinsured (UM/UIM) motorist coverage on their motor vehicle insurance policies. Under this requirement, your policy’s UM/UIM coverage limits must at least equal the highest bodily injury limit on any one motor vehicle insured under the policy.
Please note that these are minimums required by North Carolina state law, not suggested coverage amounts. The simple fact is, each state’s minimum requirements are typically inadequate to sufficiently cover your costs should you be involved in a major accident. The shortfall will have to be made up out of your own pocket. Obviously, having to pay this difference could easily destroy one financially. Therefore, it is highly recommended to get much higher coverage amounts. Consult pages elsewhere on this site for recommendations in this regard.
