Delaware Auto Insurance Requirements
The Delaware auto insurance requirements stipulated by law are:
All vehicles registered in the State of Delaware are required to have the minimum liability insurance coverage of $15,000/$30,000/$10,000. A valid insurance identification card is required to be in the possession of the driver or carried in the vehicle and shall be produced upon the request of a police officer or any other party involved in an accident with the insured.
Violators are subject to a fine of $1,500 for the first offense, $3,000 for subsequent offenses and a six-month suspension of driving privileges.
In addition, the Division of Motor Vehicles audits vehicles for insurance compliance. Failure to maintain proper insurance may result in fines and/or driver’s license suspensions. License plates must be surrendered to the Division prior to canceling insurance for any reason on vehicles with active registrations. Tags will be returned at no charge if proper insurance is provided and the registration has not expired.
Please note that these are minimums required by Delaware state law, not suggested coverage amounts. The simple fact is, each state’s minimum requirements are typically inadequate to sufficiently cover your costs should you be involved in a major accident. The shortfall will have to be made up out of your own pocket. Obviously, having to pay this difference could easily destroy one financially. Therefore, it is highly recommended to get much higher coverage amounts. Consult pages elsewhere on this site for recommendations in this regard.
