The Colorado auto insurance requirements stipulated by law are:

1. $25,000 per person for bodily injury;
2. $50,000 per accident for bodily injury; and
3. $15,000 per accident for property damage

Additional coverage, such as medical payment coverage, uninsured motorist coverage, comprehensive and collision are available, but not required.

As of Jan. 1, 2009, Colorado requires mandatory “med-pay” coverage with all insurance policies. Consumers may refuse this coverage in writing.

Please note that these are minimums required by Colorado state law, not suggested coverage amounts. The simple fact is, each state’s minimum requirements are typically inadequate to sufficiently cover your costs should you be involved in a major accident. The shortfall will have to be made up out of your own pocket. Obviously, having to pay this difference could easily destroy one financially.  Therefore, it is highly recommended to get much higher coverage amounts.  Consult pages elsewhere on this site for recommendations in this regard.
